ADVANCED DRIVER TRAINING

Go Beyond Basic Driving

Advanced driving training for experienced drivers who want to improve their ability to anticipate hazards, assess road situations and make safer, more deliberate decisions.

The focus moves beyond basic vehicle control towards defensive driving, highway skills, overtaking, night driving, difficult traffic, changing conditions and independent road judgement.

COURSE OVERVIEW

Advanced Driving Is About Anticipation and Judgement

Experienced drivers often have good vehicle control, but advanced driving requires another level of awareness. The driver needs to understand what other road users may do, identify potential hazards early and continually adjust speed, position and following distance.

Advanced training therefore focuses on the relationship between the vehicle, the road, traffic and the environment around it.

Rather than simply reacting to situations, the driver learns to recognise developing situations earlier and make appropriate decisions with sufficient time and space.

The course can be particularly useful for drivers who regularly travel on busy city roads, highways, unfamiliar routes or longer journeys.

WHO IS THIS COURSE FOR?

Designed for Drivers Ready for the Next Level

Experienced Drivers

Drivers who already operate a vehicle comfortably and want to refine their road skills.

Regular Highway Drivers

Drivers who undertake highway or intercity journeys and want to improve their awareness and decision-making.

Safety-Focused Drivers

Drivers interested in developing stronger defensive-driving habits and better hazard anticipation.

Drivers Returning to the Road

Drivers who have been away from regular driving and want to rebuild their confidence in more demanding conditions.

ADVANCED CURRICULUM

What You Will Work On

Advanced lessons are adapted to the driver's experience and objectives. The following areas form the core of the programme.

1

Advanced Driver Assessment

Review existing driving habits, vehicle control, observation, road positioning, speed management and decision-making to identify areas for improvement.

2

Hazard Anticipation

Learn to identify clues that may indicate developing hazards, including the behaviour and positioning of other road users.

3

Defensive Driving

Develop strategies for maintaining appropriate safety margins and allowing for the possibility that another road user may make an unexpected move.

4

Speed Management

Understand how speed should be adjusted according to visibility, traffic, road layout, weather and available stopping distance.

5

Advanced Road Positioning

Refine lane position and vehicle placement to improve visibility, maintain safety margins and prepare appropriately for upcoming road situations.

6

Highway Driving

Develop highway skills including lane discipline, speed management, merging, maintaining following distance and reading traffic flow.

7

Overtaking and Passing

Understand the observations, spacing, visibility and judgement required before passing slower-moving traffic where permitted and appropriate.

8

Merging and Lane Discipline

Practise integrating into traffic, selecting appropriate gaps and making planned lane changes while maintaining awareness of surrounding vehicles.

9

Night Driving

Where appropriate, develop awareness of reduced visibility, headlights, glare, pedestrians and changing visual information after dark.

10

Adverse Weather and Road Conditions

Understand how rain, reduced visibility, slippery surfaces and other changing conditions can affect vehicle control, visibility and stopping distance.

11

Long-Distance Driving

Develop better planning, fatigue awareness, route awareness, speed management and concentration for longer journeys.

12

Independent Decision-Making

Apply advanced skills with progressively less instructor intervention while maintaining appropriate safety margins.

ADVANCED ROAD SCENARIOS

Learn to Handle More Challenging Situations

Advanced driving skills become valuable when the road environment becomes more complex. Depending on the driver's ability and lesson objectives, training can cover situations such as:

Highway Traffic

Reading traffic flow, maintaining safe spacing and managing speed on faster roads.

Lane Changes

Planning lane changes and identifying suitable gaps without creating unnecessary risk.

Overtaking

Understanding when passing is appropriate and when waiting is the safer decision.

Night Conditions

Managing reduced visibility, glare and changing visual information.

Wet Roads

Adjusting speed, following distance and driving style to changing road conditions.

Unfamiliar Routes

Navigating unfamiliar roads while maintaining attention on the traffic environment.

SKILLS DEVELOPMENT

Advanced Driving Skills

  • Earlier identification of potential hazards.
  • Better anticipation of other road users.
  • Improved speed and following-distance management.
  • More deliberate lane positioning and lane changes.
  • Better judgement when approaching complex situations.
  • Greater highway awareness and traffic-flow management.
  • More considered decisions about overtaking and passing.
  • Better adaptation to night and changing weather conditions.
  • Improved concentration during longer journeys.
  • Greater independence in unfamiliar road environments.

The Objective: Better Decisions, Not Faster Driving

Advanced driving is not about driving faster or taking greater risks. The objective is to improve observation, anticipation, planning, vehicle control and decision-making so that the driver has more time and space to respond appropriately to changing road situations. Continued real-world experience remains an important part of developing these skills.

DEFENSIVE DRIVING

Think Ahead. See More. React Earlier.

Defensive driving is about managing risk by anticipating what may happen around you and maintaining enough time, space and visibility to respond appropriately.

Scan the Road

Develop a wider and more continuous view of the road environment rather than concentrating only on the vehicle immediately ahead.

Create Time

Appropriate speed and anticipation provide more time to recognise and respond to developing situations.

Maintain Space

Maintain useful space around the vehicle so that unexpected changes do not immediately become emergency situations.

Expect Mistakes

Consider that pedestrians, cyclists and drivers may behave unexpectedly and prepare accordingly.

Plan Ahead

Read road signs, junctions, traffic flow and road layout early so decisions are not left until the last moment.

Avoid Unnecessary Risk

Good judgement includes recognising when waiting, slowing down or changing a plan is the appropriate choice.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Advanced Driving FAQs

No. The advanced programme is intended for drivers who already have adequate basic vehicle control and road-driving experience. An initial assessment can help determine whether advanced training or additional intermediate practice would be more appropriate.

No. Advanced driving focuses on observation, anticipation, planning, vehicle control, appropriate speed, road positioning and risk management. Higher speed is not the objective of the programme.

Highway driving can form part of the programme when appropriate to the driver's ability, training objectives and prevailing conditions. Skills such as lane discipline, merging, following distance and traffic-flow awareness can be practised.

Night driving can be included where appropriate. Training can address reduced visibility, glare, lighting, pedestrians and the different visual demands of driving after dark.

Where appropriate and permitted, training can cover the observation, visibility, spacing and judgement involved in overtaking. An important part of advanced driving is also recognising situations where overtaking should not be attempted.

There is no fixed number suitable for every driver. The requirement depends on current experience, the skills being developed, frequency of training and the learner's individual objectives.
